Launched for the first time in 2021, the E.DSO ‘Digital DSO Power Award’ has the ambition to be a recognition for the most meaningful and relevant digital innovative initiatives contributing to the shaping of the new role of Distribution System Operators.
This year 3 ex-aequo awards have been granted by a prestigious and knowledgeable selection committee and were disclosed at today’s 4th E.DSO Stakeholder and Innovation Council event.
EDP Redes Spain has been rewarded for the ‘Active Networks Management’ project as best contribution to ‘System Operation’.
Fluvius has won the prize with the initiative ‘DSO Boost Customers Insights with Data’ for the best ‘Customer Engagement’ contribution.
Piclo Flex, an independent marketplace for trading energy flexibility online, has been rewarded for the ‘Market Facilitation’ category.
On the same occasion, a ‘Career, Academic & Merit Award’ has been granted to Ronnie Belmans, Professor Emeritus at the KU Leuven, Advisor to the board of EnergyVille and Advisor at the Florence school of regulation. Nikos Hatziargyriou, Professor in Power Systems at the Athens National Technical University also received the award. This special recognition wants to acknowledge the eminent contribution made to the progress of network technologies in electricity distribution.
Finally, a ‘Knowledge Sharing Merit’ was also awarded today to Gridspertise, headed by Robert Denda as Sole Administrator and CEO and Head of Innovation & Industrialisation at Enel Global Infrastructure & Networks, as a recognition of how remarkably the new venture is fostering the digitalisation of advanced metering, networks and field operations.

Piclo’s mission is to decarbonise the grid. We develop software solutions that make our energy networks smarter, flexible and more sustainable. Piclo Max, our market access platform, enables flex sellers (such as EV and battery owners) to access all electricity markets from one place. Piclo Flex, our flexibility services marketplace, enables flex buyers (system operators) to source flexible electricity from flex sellers during times of high demand or low supply.
To date, Piclo has over 350,000 registered flexible assets representing 26+ GW of registered flex capacity, with flexibility contracts awarded totalling £75m and 3+ GW of flexible capacity procured.
Piclo currently operates in six global markets: in the UK, supporting all six Distribution System Operators (UK Power Networks, SP Energy Networks, Electricity North West, Northern Powergrid, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks and National Grid Electricity Distribution); and the independent System Operator (NESO); in Ireland (ESB Networks), Italy (E-Distribuzione), Portugal (E-REDES)); in Australia (CitiPower, Powercor); and in the United States in New York State (National Grid) and Connecticut (United Illuminating).
